Food... or FUD?

Check out this article. What the hell is wrong with the world?

Here's the crux of the article: France and a few other countries in the EU want a complete ban on GM food. I'd love to be able to tell you why, but I can't. Read the article, you'll see what I mean. Literally at no point is a REASON given for the fear, uncertainly and doubt that obviously spurs this move. Is the GM corn dangerous? The article says the EU itself says no. Is the GM Corn some sort of ecological risk? I wouldn't know, the folks calling for the ban seem to have supplied no reason what-so-ever for their call to ban this stuff.

Maybe they just don't like the idea of quickly and cheaply feeding the world. Maybe they just prefer that our ever increasing populations take up all the growing space, forcing us to die off in a mass starvation. Maybe they're against inoculating the poor who can't afford vaccines via the food they eat. Maybe, just maybe, they're organic farmers who want the market to themselves.

Or maybe I should listen to Occam. It seems to me the most obvious reason is that they fear change. Change is what has kept the human population of this world alive. Change is what has enabled us to support the population we have today. Yet, historically, change is the thing we fear the most. It's like we'd rather wallow in our own ignorance, wrapped in cloaks of our own self-inflicted misery than rise up and better ourselves and our situations.

Or maybe they're right. Maybe we should return to the old ways. Like in the 19th century when another group of bold "back to our roots" activists pushed for a ban on change. Of course, if we did, we'd have to hunt down and hang all of those same activists, because that's what we did to the Luddites who were trying to stop the industrial revolution...

...of course, now a days, we don't hunt down and kill the activists that hold back progress. I think even our anti-"Frankenfood" activist friends would have to agree, not all change is bad... and when you look at it that way, are we really that far away from "Well, fine let's let this happen, but let's keep a close eye on it so it doesn't become dangerous." and isn't that where we actually want to be?

Anti-GM activists should be made to eat only food they grow themselves. In Darfur.
